09.05.2014, Victory Day marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the Second World War. It was the end of the Great Patriotic War for the USSR, which lost about 25 million citizens during the four years of fighting with Nazi Germany. After the collapse of the Soviet Union festival lost its importance but during Vladimir Putin's presidency it has again became a major national festival. On the Day of Victory veterans wear their medals and attend military parades. Veterans used to receive flowers from younger Russians who show their respect for elders. People also used to wear St. George's black-and-orange ribbon - a sign of respect and remembrance.
