The House of Soviets
Author: Przemysław Kozłowski Blog / 19 January, 2015 / Age: 2 yrs

The House of Soviets is unfinished building in Kaliningrad, Russia. The design by architect Yulian L. Shvartsbreim was inspired by development of the city Brazil and is an example of Brutalism architecture. Construction started in 1970 next to the place where Königsberg Castle was situated and blown up and cleared away between 1967 and 1969. Placing the building near the castle ruins on marshy soil resulted in structural problems. The construction was stopped in 1985 and never finished. In 2005, for Kaliningrad's 60th and Königsberg's 750th anniversary, windows were installed and elevation was painted blue. Although the building is closed to the public, urban explorers from abroad and local youth manage to enter it and explore.
